Plastic Toxins in the News

Last week, Canada thrust BPA (Bisphenol-A) onto the front pages by declaring it to be toxic.  Suddenly everyone's talking about phthalates, now that they've realized that BPA leaches out of commonly used polycarbonate plastic containers into our food and drinks!  Most of the press has focused on polycarbonate baby bottles and those ubiquitous Nalgene bottles, but there are other sources of exposure to phthalates that may surprise you....   This week we'll talk about these chemicals, why we should be concerned about them, and discuss some ways to limit our pets' exposure.  Eager for a preview?  Earthresource.org has a good overview of plastic toxins here.

Scary stuff! Do we need to go back to using pottery and glass?

Actually, glass and ceramic is not a bad idea, as we'll discuss in a future posting.... although there are some chemicals that can leach out of certain types of glass and from certain glazes, too. Still, most glass and ceramic containers intended for foods are going to be safer than most plastic ones. Check out Sigg bottles to carry water; our research suggests that they're even more inert than glass bottles.
